Camp Sonshine currently has the following
staff positions available:
Group Counselors
Group counselors work with a specific group of campers throughout the summer.
This position can often vary because of our campers’ range of ages which is 4 to 16 years old.
A Group Counselor will have a group of about 8 to 16 campers who are all the same age or
grade level. The larger groups will have a teen Leader in Training (LIT) to assist the Group Counselor
(this usually occurs in younger age groups). Throughout the summer, a Group counselor will have
numerous opportunities to impact the life of each child – whether it be through conversation,
an uplifting comment, excited encouragement, a hug, or even just a smile. Group counselors
are invited to create their own traditions, to get charged up about doing crazy things and find ways
to make each child feel he or she is a part of something special.
Today more than ever, children and teens need positive role models – someone whose spiritual and
emotional actions speak louder than their words. Over the years we have found that when a
Group Counselor shows our campers the warmth, compassion and respect they deserve,
the counselor receives the same treatment – three-fold. It is a joy to watch a camper grow to love
and respect his or her Group Counselor… so much so, it is typical for tears to flow at the end
of the summer session as campers say goodbye to someone they now consider one of their best friends.
Activity Counselors
Camp Sonshine campers typically have one thing on their minds – having fun! And the activities
we offer are a very big part of their reason for coming to Camp Sonshine. Activity Counselors are
our "creativity experts" – an integral part of our team that specializes in one area of activity so they
can provide campers with the opportunity to try new things, enjoy new challenges and, of course,
to have fun. Ask any of our Activity Counselor alumni and they’ll tell you that having the opportunity
to be a role model for so many different children has been an experience they’ll never forget.
Although our campers enjoy the amazing activities we provide, our Activity Counselors seem to
have just as much fun! Getting to hit a bulls-eye in Archery, experience wild rides in Go-karts
or enjoy relaxing (and exciting) Canoe rides in the sparkling Pond. Of course there are new games
to teach (and learn) at the Sports and Water Games or funny skits to rehearse for Drama.
There’s Discovery Time where you can give your campers the encouragement they need to see
the world in a whole new light or help them use the Ropes to get them across a sea of molten lava.
Whatever activities there are, our Activity Counselors are in charge – every step of the way! Specific Activity positions are listed on the application.
